EVCA: Describe a defining moment in your career and how it shaped where you are today.
Kate: When I started my career, I knew I wanted to learn from experienced teams on the operator side. I worked under world-class marketing leaders who came from companies like Marketo, Salesforce, and Adobe and had a great playbook they were willing to teach me. I was on a traditional marketing path and loved the opportunity to flex creative and analytical skills while working remotely in Charleston, SC. While this was a valuable experience, the further I got into my career, the more I felt I was missing challenges and opportunities from the happenstance moments of working in person.
I had previously lived in San Francisco for one summer and knew the impact of being in this uniquely revolutionary environment. I’ll never forget my last day of working remotely, closing my laptop at 5pm, and packing a bag for my cross-country flight to San Francisco early the next morning for my first day at Bullpen.
EVCA: What is an emerging technology trend that will have a significant impact on the world in the next decade?
Kate: As AI has rapidly matured, I've seen increasingly impressive use cases of leveraging AI for SEO and demand generation. Across industries, AI will transform the art of marketing and sales by allowing for highly personalized campaigns.
Beyond personalized marketing, AI is shifting how personalized the products can be. For example, instead of software providing an actionable dashboard with insights on consumer spending, category sales, and frequently visited web pages, companies can use AI to analyze all available customer data. This approach will not only optimize marketing but enable the creation of new products better suited to their customers' interests. At Bullpen, we’ve seen the beginnings of this in unconventional categories like women’s audio erotica and sports betting. Our goal is to find and support the next generation of non-obvious startups that this AI wave will produce.
