I am a big believer in ‘raising the ceiling’ and using the positive second-order effects to democratize opportunity. What made this click for me was learning how a lot of the technologies we use today in medicine, industry and our personal lives are downstream of the space race from the 60s and 70s, something that might have seemed ‘wasteful’ at the time. I practice this at a personal level by volunteering as a math tutor for grade school kids in India to help them build a foundation to train for better jobs than they would get otherwise.
